Back in the late 14th and early 15th centuries, people began to talk about quilling. It is believed that monks first began to create jewellry in this way. In the Middle Ages, paper was expensive, so not everyone could afford to make jewellry and other crafts from it. Wealthy ladies from high society were engaged in quilling. In addition, this material was considered impractical and short-lived, so products made from it were not popular.

At the end of the 20th century, the popularity of quilling has increased significantly. Craftsmen all over the world strive to create many unique crafts that are intricate, original and attractive.

You can buy quilling strips at almost every office supply store. It is also possible to prepare this material yourself. You just need to cut sheets of white or colored double-sided paper. However, the latter option is time consuming, so it is much easier to use ready-made paper strips.

Quilling technique

The technique under consideration is based on the twisting of paper strips. However, there are many different options for folding them. As a result, geometric shapes (circle, rhombus, square, etc.), curls, leaves, hearts, drops, etc. are obtained. To begin with, the paper is rolled into a roller, after which it is weakened, slightly dissolved and the details are given the desired shape. Then, using glue, you need to fix the tip of the roll so that it does not unfold.

Quilling is famous all over the world, especially in Western Europe and Asia. The European and Asian schools of quilling have some differences. So, Korean craftsmen can boast of the ability to weave the thinnest volumetric lace made from narrow paper strips. At the same time, the British make simpler figurines with fewer details.

To create a craft using the quilling technique, you need to use some tools and materials:

scissors or utility knife;
winding rod;
A toothpick, needle, wooden stick, pencil can act as a screw for winding. It all depends on which part you want to receive.

Quilling crafts

A large number of different crafts can be created from paper strips. The most common postcards and pictures. Twisted parts of various shapes are glued to paper or cardboard, resulting in an original applique. Such crafts are excellent even for beginners. Making more complex figurines requires skill and practice.

In the quilling technique, you can create not only unique postcards, but also voluminous products: boxes, napkin holders, decorative vases, etc. In fact, there are a lot of ideas, everyone can choose a craft option for themselves. Colored paper parts produce amazingly beautiful flowers, animals, birds, landscapes and portraits.

Especially talented craftsmen even make crockery using quilling. Decorative cups with saucers and spoons will effectively decorate the shelf in the sideboard. Of course, you won’t be able to use them for tea drinking, however, such crafts will delight the eye and emphasize the individuality of their owner. Napkin holders can be used for their intended purpose, they will look great on a festive table.

Probably, each of us has heard that the best gift is the one made with our own hands. Therefore, you can please family and friends with an original box, greeting card or a bunch of flowers that will never fade. Even a regular money envelope will become unique and more attractive if you decorate it with a beautiful paper striped flower.

Quilling products go well with elements made in other HandMade techniques. For example, in a postcard, you can use paper lace, beaded parts, scraps of fabric, beads, corrugated paper, etc.

Main material

To create beautiful crafts using the quilling technique, you need to choose the right consumable. The quilling paper should be thick enough not to tear, and flexible enough so that the rollers curl easily. Very thin strips will not hold their shape and the paper will get soaked from the glue. Of course, products from this option will lose their decorative effect. Cardboard is only suitable as a background for a picture or postcard. In this case, it is even preferable to ordinary sheets, since volumetric pictures are quite heavy and a thin background can be deformed. But twisting parts from cardboard strips is extremely inconvenient, because they do not have the required plasticity.

To create one craft, paper strips of various thicknesses can be used – from 3 to 9 mm. It all depends on the elements that will be made of them. In addition to the usual straight stripes, craftsmen also use paper fringes, for example, for the centers of flowers or for decorating the edges of a postcard.
